The Meathouse

"The Meathouse" is the name given to the subterranean storeroom in the cemetery of Broogen. This storeroom is where the unnamed poor dead (typically beggars/urchins/illegally disposed of slaves) are kept prior to a bi-weekly mass cremation. Mostly there's a couple of dozen bodies stored here at any one time but in winter this number rises significantly.

The Meathouse actually was originally built as a mass grave for those who died of the plague and so is capable of holding hundreds of corpses at a time, spread over two chambers. At the time, keeping the dead in a confined single area underground was thought to be a possible way of stopping the contamination.

Bodies are usually deposited, unceremoniously, into the Meathouse via a trapdoor on the ceiling. At ground level a pair of double doors leads down a short flight of stairs into the main chamber.
