Broogen Castle, in the city of Broogen in the kingdom of Thorast, is the home of the ruling (Human) family of Thorast and is currently (as of 343 IC) the home of King Leopold II.

Location

The castle is situated in the northern part of the city , within the older city walls.

Description

The castle is by far the largest structure in Broogen, dwarfing even the courthouse in the forum. The castle itself can only be accessed via a single gate house at the southernmost pat of the estate.

To the west of the walls surrounding the castle there are high embankments, a remnant of the older defences, whereas houses butt up against the eastern walls.

The castle is built upon a natural hill which has been further excavated to sharp drops to reduce the chance of anyone reaching it without supernatural assistance.

Defences

The defences of the castle are both physical and magical in nature.

The physical defences come in the form of multiple walls, manned by armed guards, a restricted point of entry by road, elevated outlook providing high visibility of the surroundings and the presence of Leopold's personal retinue of soldiers - the Blue Shields.

The magical defences are thought to be wards, a small number of tame cockatrices and the proximity of the Chancery base. The aim of the magical defences are note to account for every possible incursion, merely to make contemplating the wisdom of it versus the likelihood of reprisals a necessity.
