The 'Blue Shields' is the nickname given to the Royal guard of the court of King Leopold II of Thorast. They, rather obviously, have this name due to their, bearing the device of the king - a white hammer on a navy-blue background.

The Blue Shields are permanently stationed in the city of Broogen. Their barracks is in the grounds of the castle but they are a common sight throughout the city as they also act as the King's representatives in low-level diplomatic encounters.

The Blue Shields typically wear plate armour when on duty protecting the royal family but otherwise drop back to chain mail for 'normal' activities. Although membership of the Blue Shields is open to men and women, is is entirely a human organisation.

Currently (as of 343 IC) there are thought to be about 90 active Blue Shields.
