Fort Viridian

Situated by the lake which is its namesake, this fort is typical of many scattered across Thorast.

Fort Viridian is home to the 5th cohort of the 62nd Imperial Army Legion (about 500 men), and as such is capable of patrolling an area only about one-third the size of the outpost at Shadowfell Keep. Due to this there are many towns and villages near the fort which actually fall outside of the area which they can regularly patrol. Hence many of these settlements are assigned one or two contubernia on "permanent loan" to aid with their defence.

Fort Viridian's position means that only the village of Hirschorn is actually in its standard catchment area so this fort has to send regular patrols to the towns of Mulgreen, Turvin and Larenfast. Hence the number of soldiers that can be found in the fort itself is typically less than 300 on any given day.

The fort itself is arranged in a square with a stone outer wall, lined with six guard towers on each side. Each tower is always manned by at least soldiers and is fitted with some form of heavy artillery, such as a catapulta or scorpio. The fort also has a number of beacons which, when lit, can be seen by three other forts, including Shadowfell Keep and Fort Basilisk.
