Retreat

In layout this small town is very similar to nearby Winterhaven but with a population of 1400 (mostly humans) it can afford slightly better defences, including a proper town gate with a manned Scorpio above it.

The Retreat town watch is also slighty larger at 40 men and are equipped with broadswords and leather armour, which means they can actually keep the peace with a small degree of effectiveness.

The town itself is nearly 15km east of Winterhaven, which places it almost exactly midway between Winterhaven and Wayfarer's Rest, meaning that either of these two towns is just within 1 day's easy walk. However in order to improve it's defences, Retreat also has a "beacon tower" - essentially a wooden tower on top of which a ring of torches can be mounted and lit. This is only lit if the town requires assistance from it's neighbours and can also be seen at Shadowfell Keep.
