Aanvang Island
Aanvang Island is the smallest of the three islands that make of the kingdom of Thorast. Its location, in the strait between Academia and Thorast, makes it a useful stop over point for travellers between the two countries.
Geography
Aanvang Island itself is just under 50km (30 miles) from North to South and just 15km (10 miles) East to West (at its widest point), which means that it is possible to ride from one end to the other in a day.
Aanvang is a moderately flat, lightly wooded island with few changes in terrain for travellers to worry about.
Politics
Aanvang owes its political allegiance to Thorast and the garrison at Fort Aanvang is manned by troops that are native to that land. The ferry that runs the 20km or so from Ranst to Lilo is also partly funded by the Thorast treasury.
Population
As of 343IC The total population of Aanvang just under 8,000 people. Nearly all of this is made up of Merebian Humans although scattered across the island are a couple of hundred Dwarves and a few dozen each of Elves, Gnomes and Tieflings. Ymirkin are present on the island but in very small numbers. The most populated settlements are:
- Heerlen, a small town - 1500
- Ranst, barely more than a village - 800
- Henk, a village - 600
- Vengen, a village - 500
- Costurch - 350
The remaining population of the island live in small, isolated farmhouses and family groupings scattered around the bleak island.
Notable Places
The largest town on the island is Heerlen. There is a small copper mine close to the village of "Henk" and the town of "Vengen" supplies lumber to the neighbouring populace. Smaller settlements include the underwhelming village of Costurch. Otherwise Aanvang is unremarkable in practically every way.
Its inclusion in this wiki is purely that, as a small, flat, dull island, it is the perfect place for adventurers to start their careers.
