This 'keep' is actually a moderate sized fort, situated in the eastern half of the Kleinius Vale approx 40 kilometres east-north-east of Brindol, 20 kilometres west of Kalingarde, and just 8 kilometres south of Wayfarer's Rest.
The 'keep' (as it is known locally) is responsible for the safety of the roads, town and villages in it's immediate catchment area, which extends to a radius of about 30 kilometres. Hence it is also responsible for the defence of the nearby towns of Retreat and Winterhaven. The keep's area of authority does overlap with that of Fort Unstein but only over a small region so disagreements over which fort is in control rarely arise.
Shaowfell Keep derives its name from the ruins of the old keep, which was destroyed by marauding orcs in the last century. Much of the stone used in the construction of the fort came from the ruins of the keep. The original Shadowfell Keep was named after it's owner Claudius Shadowfell who allegedly died in the attack that finally saw the keep fall.
The current 'keep' is now home to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cohorts of the 62nd Imperial Legion and hence can muster a fighting force of around 1400 soldiers.
