The people referred to as 'Tieflings' (pronounced:TY-Flings) by the the Merebian Empire are actually more correctly 'The Children of Orcus'.

This title is a reference to the curse, uttered by the demon-lord Orcus, that befell the noble people of Byzantrium.

The curse turned thousands of ordinary people into misshapen demon-like monstrosities. Worse still, the curse was hereditary and all their offspring from that point were inflicted with the same appearance.

While most people accept that Tieflings are not inherently evil, their countenance and their blood curse is more than enough to make most races give them a wide berth.
