Layer 666 is a special case in the Abyss. Rumours abound that the actual ruler of the Abyss lives there. It is also rumoured that no Demons reside there. Certainly no Demon wishes to go there without a VERY good reason and without the backing of the ruler of their own realm (and preferably that of some others). The Abyss is not one location but is in fact a collection of 666 'demi-planes'. Each demi-plane is called a 'Layer' and each has the same, finite, size (a little under a million kilometres across and a quarter of a million kilometres thick).
The 'Layers' are stacked upon each other vertically so for example, if you found yourself on the 33rd Layer of the Abyss then travelling in one direction will take you to the 32nd Layer, whilst travelling in the exact opposite direction would take you to the 34th.
Each layer of the Abyss is the home to trillions of Demons, each one fighting to ascend above their neighbours. Additionally, every Demon is also engaged in the 'Blood War' against the Devils. No time passes on the Layers of the Abyss - it has been the same 'day' for all of eternity and will remain the same day until the end of the Universe.
