Thanks to the cosmopolitan nature of the Merebian Empire the available variety of tavern food is vast. However, throughout the Empire there does appear to be a block of "common" foods. These are listed below in a series of very broad categories. Note: "tavern" food is designed to be eaten in situ at a tavern (or inn). For food designed to be eaten while moving see Street Food.
Vegetarian friendly food is demoted by (v). There are no vegan options listed.
"Dry Food"
This category includes pastries, breads and biscuits.
Examples:
- Walnut bread (v)
- Fish tart (the "fish" usually being a garum jelly)
- Cinnamon cookies
- Raisin biscuits
- Bread loaf/roll
"Soups"
This category includes soups, broths and stews. Basically food that has to served in a bowl and is predominantly liquid.
Examples:
- Pottage (Puls)
- Chikia and lentil stew (v)
- Pinoli stew (v) - a stew made almost entirely with a selection of nuts, such as pine nuts, walnuts, hazlenuts and sweet chestnuts
- Mixed fish broth - usually a combination of "cheap" fish such as mackerel, herring and coley
- Meat stew - the "meat" might be specified or not but is typically the cheapest cuts of chicken, lamb, goat, pig, or cow along with a small selection of root vegetables.
"Boiled" food
This is any food that is cooked by placing in a pot of water and boiling BUT where the dish itself is not predominantly liquid (and hence is not "soup").
- Boiled egg (chicken, duck or goose)
- Boiled chikia/cabbage/potato/carrot/cauliflower or other root crop
"Roast" Meats
Basically any meat that is served "on the bone". There are no vegetarian options in this last, for (hopefully) obvious reasons. Despite the name, most "roast" food is actually served cold as taverns need to prepare these ahead of time.
Examples:
- Roast greenfish (only if available from Lake Viridian)
- Roast dire potato (only if available from Bal-Morath)
- Roast trout/salmon and cod. These types of fish tend to be quite expensive
- Roast Pork/lamb/mutton/beef
"Cold" Foods
A generic category for food that has to be kept and served cold.
Examples:
- Cheese (goat/cow)
- Milk (goat/cow)
