Dominus

Dominus is the power centre of the Merebian Empire, controlled by Humans that make it their home.

Geography

Dominus is situated in the centre of the Known World and is surrounded by the island nations that make up the Empire, as well as those that are unaligned to any group.

Although it is the largest single landmass in the Known World (at least four times that of Thorast), Dominus is still not a huge nation and is just under 450 miles from West to East and 300 miles from North to South. Traversing the nation is relatively easy thanks to the many excellent roads built by the Legions but Dominus has a greater variety of terrain types than almost any other Imperial nation, from the mountainous region in the centre, to the dry plains of the south, the volcanoes in the west to the forests in the north.

Demographics

Dominus was once the homeland of the Dwarves who has settlements on many of the islands of (what is now) the Empire. Then the Elves and Gnomes arrived on what is now Lyrazante. Due to the nature of the land the Elves and Gnomes requested that they be given sole control of it. The Dwarves, having preferred the mountains of Thorast agreed as long as they could claim that land as their own. The two races also lived peacefully alongside each other on Dominus. Then the Humans arrived and all the other races were slowly pushed out in preferences of this fast breeding and destructive race.

These days, as the centre of the Merebian Empire, the racial distribution is about 50% Humans, 18% Dwarves, 12% Elves, 10% Gnomes, 6% Tieflings and 3% Ymirkin. The final 1% is made of of slave races such as Goblins, Orcs and Hobgoblins.

Notable Places

Dominus is a land with a history of conquest and this shows most significantly in the 10 major cities of the nation. Nine of these cities were the original city-states conquered by Emperor Darameus over three centuries ago. The tenth, Cinnibar is a relatively new city built to house the nation's ever increasing population and to display the power of the Empire.

Each of the cities is constructed differently and has its own character. At a local level they are even governed slightly differently. In many ways Dominus can be considered to be 10 very small nations, operating as one.

However, few places in the Known World can claim to be any more 'notable' than the capitol city, Merebia. Merebia is a sprawling coastal city located on the north-east coast of Dominus. It is surrounded by numerous and impressive villas and estates.

Dominus has 11 permanent legions assigned to it: the 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 12th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 21st and 30th. There are 2 legions (10,000 men) assigned to the protection of Merebia, and one full legion for each other city. Each city also maintains a city watch which usually consists of about 1% of the population (so giving most of the cities well over a thousand extra 'combatants' if needed for civic defence).

Flora and Fauna

The forests of Dominus are still home to many other “fae” races such as centaurs, satyrs, dryads and treants. However, as the Empire cuts down these forests for timber and to build settlements, these “fae” races are becoming far more reclusive and have mostly retreated to other lands such as Erganth or the Elven kingdom of Lyrazante.
